Incident response on AWS · MVP

When production is on fire,
a jury decides — not a guess.

Jev Sec AI triages security and reliability incidents with a council of typed Jev judgments, lets deterministic code decide what is allowed, calls an LLM investigator only when the evidence is thin, and asks a human in Slack before anything changes. Every step is written to a hash-chained ledger.

How it works

From alarm to verified recovery

One Python process. No inbound HTTP. Read-only by default; exactly one registered action per incident, executed only by the broker.

  1. 1SignalCloudWatch alarm, ECS deploy failure or cert expiry → EventBridge → SQS
  2. 2EvidenceMetrics, logs, ECS, changes, TLS, WAF — read-only, in parallel, 6 s budget
  3. 3CompileDrain3 log templates, metric features, redaction, ≤ 20k-token state
  4. 4Jev Council4 parallel Jev requests + predicates → Chair → Round 2 → Chair
  5. 5GateEnvironment, tier, freeze, kill switch, rate limit — pure code
  6. 6ApproveSlack card; SecOps approver when security-relevant
  7. 7BrokerOne registered action, scoped STS session, live precondition re-check
  8. 8VerifyIndependent checks after a soak window; inverse on failure

The Jev Council

Independent judgments, combined by explicit rules

Asking one model the same question four times is not a council — the errors are correlated. Real independence comes from different evidence views, deterministic checkers, and a jury that can veto.

GuardiansG1–G5

A flat jury of yes/no and score questions: security relevance, signs of compromise, evidence sufficiency, severity, blast radius. They veto or cap everything else.

DiagnosticianD1

Picks the incident class from 9 options — including “unknown”, so Jev is never forced into a wrong actionable answer.

Sub-cause treeD2

Asked speculatively for every class: “assume it is X — which specific cause fits?” Some answers redirect (never block organic traffic).

LensesL1–L3

The class question again, against isolated slices: metrics only, logs only, change history only. Agreement across disjoint evidence is real independence.

PredicatesP*

Deterministic code over raw evidence — deploy within 30 min, error ratio ≥ 5×, valid replacement cert… The second key. Jev never does arithmetic.

RemediationR1

Round 2, conditioned on the diagnosis: which registered action, wait, or escalate.

Chaircode

Pure Python. Combines seats with explicit rules — never an average of confidences — into one verdict.

InvestigatorLLM

Not a voter. Called only when the council is split or short of evidence; fetches facts with read-only tools; one reconvene at most.

Five possible verdicts

AUTO_EXECUTE

Only T1 actions, only in staging, only with calibrated seats, full lens agreement and both keys.

PROPOSE

A Slack card with the evidence, the diagnosis path and Approve / Reject / Edit / Take over. Production is always here.

INVESTIGATE

Thin, split or contradictory evidence: the LLM investigator gathers facts and the council reconvenes once.

ESCALATE

A human owns it, with the diagnosis attached. No action is staged. Any internal error lands here too.

SUPPRESS

No user impact, nothing actionable, no security signal: a quiet note.

Benchmark

Same incidents, eight decision-makers

Each configuration sees the same 10 labeled incidents. Coverage is how often it acted; accuracy is how often that action was the right one; an unsafe action is any action that was wrong or should not have happened at all.

Provenance: incidents are synthetic, labeled scenarios. Jev answers come from the labeled “ideal” Jev until live TypeSafe recordings are added (so K0–K5 here test the decision logic, not Jev itself). The LLM is live: nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b via OpenRouter. Generated 2026-10-21 16:04 UTC.

Live runs

Real pipeline, simulated world

Each run below executed the real pipeline end to end: Postgres ledger, council logic, gate, approval flow, broker (scoped STS session, live precondition checks), verifier — with the LLM investigator and AI summaries live on nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b. Evidence comes from a labeled scenario and AWS is simulated in-process.

Bad deploy, logs missing

INVESTIGATE → PROPOSE ⇒ RESOLVED

The log query timed out. The council refuses to guess, the LLM investigator fetches the logs, the council reconvenes and proposes a rollback.

Bad deploy

PROPOSE ⇒ RESOLVED

A deploy drops a required env var. Three independent evidence views agree; both keys turn; a human approves the rollback.

AI summary (not used for decisions): The TLS certificate for lab.jevsec.internal expired two hours ago, causing a spike in TLS negotiation errors to 260 from a baseline of zero and an 87% drop in request volume, prompting a PROPOSE verdict with service ownership and SecOps required. L7 flood

Runner-up: bad_deploy (0.01).
Path score 0.8464 (ranking only).
AI summary (not used for decisions): The council diagnosed a layer‑7 DDoS attack on the lab‑web service in production, driven by a single source generating roughly 10.5× the normal request rate and accounting for 70 % of traffic, with CPU at 88 % and request latency spiking to 1.9 s. Safety model

Built so an AI fix cannot make the outage worse

Decisions

  • Jev output is a probabilistic classification, never authorization.
  • Every action needs two keys: a calibrated Jev answer and passing predicates.
  • Production is always propose; nothing auto-approves on timeout.
  • Any exception escalates to a human — fail closed.

The LLM

  • Read-only tools only. No shell, no HTTP, no write APIs — enforced by import contracts.
  • Logs are untrusted data, fenced in <evidence>; prompt injections are refused.
  • Its narrative never becomes evidence; only cited tool outputs do.
  • Provider is config: Bedrock or OpenRouter.

The broker

  • The only code that writes to AWS: one dedicated role per action, 15-minute STS session scoped to the target ARN.
  • Re-validates params and re-checks preconditions live before acting.
  • ≤ 3 actions per service per hour; every action has a registered inverse.
  • Every decision lands on an append-only, hash-chained ledger first.
